I Believe and I Do

I  Believe  and I Do
By Ariston P Awitan Jr. M.D.
In order to do something for your life’s benefit, you first must  believe  in what you are going to do.  Belief  is  the driving force  of   a human being.  Let   me  discuss this  on the human side, not  involving the  spiritual belief.  Let me just take one aspect of   what one does for his  life  with regards to his health.
1.     First, you have to believe  that  it is your responsibility to be healthy.  You are  the  one who choose where you live, what kind of life you are going to lead. We live in an  environment  where  there are a lot to toxins circulating in the air. We are exposed to a lot of chemicals present in the air or those that we bring to our homes, the  pesticides  that are use  to grow  our food resources, the pesticides that  we use to  prevent insects  to invade our homes, the cleaning chemicals that we use  for cleaning our houses, and even those chemicals  that we apply to our bodies  to clean and beautify ourselves.  Those  chemicals  carry toxins that are harmful  to  our health.
2.                       Second,  we  have  to believe that  we  are responsible for  what we eat to  maintain our health, and not to overload ourselves  with too much fat, too much sugar and too much acidic food.  We   learned  that we have to maintain our  bodies in an alkaline state for better health.  If we don’t believe this  basic  knowledge, we should not  be surprised  that we are gaining   the unnecessary weight and   get sick.
3.           Third, we have to  believe  that to maintain   good functioning of our organ systems, we  should not only maintain a balanced    nutrition, but also  take  at least the daily requirements of  vitamins and minerals.  We have to  believe  that  it is impossible and impractical to take the amount of  fruits and vegetables to meet  these daily  requirements.  Therefore  we have  to take  nutritional supplements in the form of powder, capsules   or tablets to meet these requirements.
4.           We have to believe that  anti-oxidants  which are contained in nutritional supplements are  necessary for   neutralizing the   free radicals in  our bodies  to prevent  degenerative  diseases  and delay  the inevitable  aging process  that our bodies undergo  through the years.  We  don’t  even have to understand the details of how these anti-oxidants neutralize the free radicals before we take them, just as we do not  need to understand the details how  the car  engine  works  before  driving our cars.
5.     We have to  believe  that  physical  fitness is important  for our health. You see people walking, jogging, running around your neighborhood early in the morning or late in the  afternoon  because they believe in physical fitness  for health maintenance.
The  above things  I  do because I believe them.  And I am a good testimony for these beliefs.  I have  passed through  my 80th birthday, Praise the Lord,  still kicking around, still walking every morning with my arnis-kali  stick-fighting  sticks, one on  each hand, and  passing my most recent medical check-up  by  our family physician  with flying colors.
